LENT VOICES — STORIES

Andy

Reflecting on prayer in everyday life.

One of our Lent Voices reflections from the Chilwell Parish community.

“Jesus gave us words to begin with”

Andy reflects on the way Jesus prayed and how he taught his disciples to pray.
For many people, prayer can feel difficult to begin. The words don’t always come easily, and sometimes we’re not sure where to start.

In the Lord’s Prayer, Jesus gives his followers a simple pattern for prayer — a prayer that Christians have spoken across centuries.

Sometimes, as we pray those familiar lines, one phrase may stand out or stay with us. A few words that feel especially meaningful in that moment.

And in those words, we may find that prayer begins to open up again — simple, steady, and rooted in the way Jesus taught us to pray.

It’s encouraging to remember that Jesus still helps us as we pray. Through the Holy Spirit he intercedes for us (Romans 8:26–27), and even now he prays with and for us (Romans 8:34).

Reflection question

As you pray today, is there a way you would like Jesus to help you pray?
You might like to simply ask him for that.

When praying the Lord’s Prayer, sometimes a particular phrase stands out.

Notice which words stay with you.
You might carry those words with you through the day until the next time you pause to pray.

Pause and pray

If you’d like to explore a simple way of reflecting on your day with God, you might try the Daily Examen. It’s a prayer practice that helps us pause, notice God’s presence in the ordinary moments of life, and bring the day back to him.

You can find a short guide to the Daily Examen, along with other ways to help you pray during Lent.
