LENT VOICES — STORIES

Ali

Reflecting on prayer in everyday life.

“Often I didn’t know what to say”

Ali speaks honestly about how prayer can sometimes feel uncertain.
There were moments, she says, when she simply didn’t know what words to use.

Over time, she’s discovered that prayer doesn’t have to be carefully constructed. It can meet you in the ordinary — while driving, walking, working, or sitting quietly for a moment.

In those everyday spaces, prayer becomes less about performance and more about presence. A brief thought. A whispered hope. A simple awareness that God is near.

Prayer, for Ali, is something that unfolds in the small moments of the day — not complicated, just real.

Ali spoke about not always having the right words. This might feel like a weakness – but the Bible sees it differently. It says this
In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. (Romans 8:26)

Reflection questions

  1. When in your ordinary day could you turn a moment into a simple prayer – even just a quiet ‘help’ or ‘thank you’?
  2. If prayer doesn’t have to be long or polished, what might change in the way you talk to God this week?
